Context - UNESCO

The Echoes Project was originated within UNESCO, when the Local and Indigenous Knowledge Systems section, headed by Nigel Crawhall, undertook a vast project to document indigenous knowledge present at various UNESCO sites, as well as the consequences of global warming on these sites, through an online atlas and a publication. After a year of internal research and several field missions (Greenland, Japan, Botswana, etc.), the project had to be suspended due to a complex political context, marked in particular by the withdrawal of the United States.

Convinced of the need to carry on this initiative — and to enrich it by placing the voices and perspectives of indigenous peoples at the forefront of the narrative — we launched the Echoes Project.

An operational partner

This close collaboration with UNESCO allows our exhibitions to be hosted at various UNESCO professional sites around the world during international events bringing together Member States.

It also gives the project access to UNESCO's network and international recognition, as well as a direct link to indigenous representatives at UNESCO-labelled sites, saving valuable time and building trust.

Finally, the UNESCO label ensures that the Echoes Project complies with the ethical chart of free, prior and informed consent with regard to the communities engagement.
